What is Post Abortion Syndrome?

Post Abortion Syndrome is sadly not a recognised illness within the UK. It is a condition that I only came across myself after studying the emotional affects and disturbances I was suffering several months after having to undergo an abortion against my will.
It is then a form of depression and anxiety disorder very similar to the highly recognised Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It affects women who have undergone an abortion but for a long period of time afterwards they feel feelings of guilt, resentment, anxiety, depression and stress.
Some women go into the decision of having an abortion in the full knowledge of what they are doing and are 100% happy with their decision. If a woman is 100% happy with that decision then it is unlikely they will suffer with a stress disorder afterwards, however other women can fall into mental illness after an abortion purely as they begin to regret the decision they made.

This is not through their own fault. Abortion is a traumatic experience, and whatever the stigma and attitude upon it, it is and should always be a woman's choice. A woman's body is her body and whatever happens within that body is that own woman's choice.

Sometimes women feel it is not their choice, they may feel pressurised into the abortion, they may feel it is their only option, they may too feel there is simply no other way. Sometimes this is the case and it is of no one else's reasons or thoughts to go against that woman in her decision. It has to be the woman's decision and only the woman's decision. No matter how a woman may be pushed, never ever should a woman be forced into making this decision.

Especially when women regret their decision of an abortion and start to suffer with the consequences of that decision, symptoms of Post Abortion Syndrome can set in. It is in essence an anxiety disorder which is and can be acute if not treated and if not supported within the right environment.
